What is CBD?  AN EXOCANNABINOID manufactured FROM CANNABIS AND HEMP PLANTS.
Cannabinoids produced outside the body are called exo-Cannabinoids. CBD is short for cannabidiol, one of over 100 exo-cannabinoids produced by cannabis and hemp. CBD is a non-psychoactive isomer of the more infamous tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which means CBD has the same molecular formula as THC.

Endocannabinoids are more natural, and more effective than exocannabinoids
It stands to reason that our bodies more readily recognize, absorb and respond to substances that are produced naturally by it.  Substances that are produced, extracted, and manufactured outside of the body, such as CBD, are less likely to result in a consistent response from our bodies.  

CBD does support the body's Endocannabinoid System by inhibiting the breakdown of your body's natural endocannabinoids.  But, if your body lacks endocannabinoids to begin with, (which is the case as we age, or our endocannabinoids are depleted by chronic pain) CBD has less effect.  There are better and safer ways to support a healthy Endocannabinoid System than CBD, ways that avoid the stigma and risk of cannabis or hemp. ​These include the use of the natural EndoCannabinoid PEA.

There are risks that CBD use may lead to a positive drug test result for THC.  This risk exists for a number of reasons, including the similarity in the chemical compounds between THC and CBD.  THC is a plant-based cannabinoid extracted from cannabis (Molecular Formula: C21H30O2).   CBD is also a plant-based cannabinoid extracted from cannabis and hemp (Molecular Formula: C21H30O2​).    CBD is an isomer of THC, which means CBD has the same molecular formula as THC.  There are concerns that in certain situations CBD may convert to THC, either prior to or after human use or consumption of CBD.  That is the case with both CBD Isolates as well as Full or Broad Spectrum CBD.
The current evidence indicates that gastric conversion of CBD to THC has been relatively consistently observed across multiple studies over the past half century; however, the circumstances in which this happens, and the subsequent clinical consequences, remain uncertain. CBD users are at high risk for having a test result report of "positive for marijuana." I see positive drug screen cases like this almost weekly in my drug test medical reviews.  (Letter to the Editor dated 2/23/2020 at this link)

WEST JORDAN — A Jordan School District bus driver said using over-the-counter CBD oil caused her to fail a drug test and lose her job.
Jeanette Hales failed the drug test despite using oil she said contains the legally permissible amount of less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol, known as THC.

Tennessee man says he was fired for testing positive for THC in CBD oils
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — A Tennessee man, who was fired after testing positive for THC, says he only used CBD oils – never marijuana. 
Hilton Mitchell started using CBD oils for his anxiety about a year ago. He says his other medications were taking a toll on him. CBD didn’t come with any side effects for Mitchell, and so he kept using it. 
CBD is legal in the State of Tennessee as long as the THC content is less than 0.3 percent. However, that can still show up on a drug test and Mitchell says it didn't stop him from being fired.
"I was pretty much astonish," said Hilton Mitchell. "I never thought I would fail a drug test."
CBD primarily comes from hemp and if you have hemp-derived CBD products that is perfectly legal in Tennessee but it doesn't necessarily mean you'll be in the clear for your drug test.

More than two dozen federal law enforcement employees, for example, have faced disciplinary action after testing positive for THC in the wake of using CBD products, says Don Mihalek, executive director of The Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, a nonprofit professional association representing more than 26,000 federal officers. 
"There's no way to differentiate between THC in CBD oil and THC in marijuana,'' says Mihalek, who added that many officers have turned to CBD products as an alternative to pain medication. But with federal agencies having zero tolerance for positive drug test results "the agencies can’t afford to play a guessing game.''

TSA STATEMENT ON TRAVELING WITH CANNABIS PRODUCTS, INCLUDING CBD

Marijuana and certain cannabis infused products, including some Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, remain illegal under federal law except for products that contain no more than 0.3 percent THC on a dry weight basis or that are approved by FDA. (See the Agriculture Improvement Act of 2018, Pub. L. 115-334.)  TSA officers are required to report any suspected violations of law to local, state or federal authorities. 
TSA’s screening procedures are focused on security and are designed to detect potential threats to aviation and passengers. Accordingly, TSA security officers do not search for marijuana or other illegal drugs, but if any illegal substance is discovered during security screening, TSA will refer the matter to a law enforcement officer.

It’s important to remember the following when it comes to CBD oil: The bottom line, any CBD or THC use is a violation waiting to happen.

  1. The labeling of many CBD products may be misleading because the products could contain higher levels of THC than what the product label states. . . 
  2. The Department of Transportation’s Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation, Part 40, does not authorize the use of Schedule I drugs, including marijuana, for any reason.  Furthermore, CBD use is not a legitimate medical explanation for a laboratory-confirmed marijuana positive result. Therefore, Medical Review Officers will verify a drug test confirmed at the appropriate cutoffs as positive, even if an employee claims they only used a CBD product. . . 

    Since the use of CBD products could lead to a positive drug test result, Department of Transportation-regulated safety-sensitive employees should exercise caution when considering whether to use CBD products.

Watch for harmful drug interactions. Research suggests that CBD can undermine the effectiveness of some drugs and increase the risks of others, especially at high doses. “Highly concentrated CBD tinctures may interfere with the liver enzyme system that metabolizes a lot of pharmaceuticals,” Abrams says. That includes blood thinners such as warfarin (Coumadin and generic), antidepressants such as fluoxetine (Prozac and generic), and cholesterol-lowering statins such as atorvastatin (Lipitor and generic).
Also, cannabis plants contain other compounds (often referred to as cannabinoids) that could be in your CBD product. The most notable one, of course, is THC, which can alter your cognition and have long-term effects on learning and memory loss, according to the American Academy of Neurology.
